Assignment Brief
Project 1 : Instructable Infographic Poster
Ms Anis gave a brief on Project 1 and how we are supposed to complete the Instructable Infographics Poster then proceeding to Project 2. She pointed out that pre-planning is crucial to the outcome and that understanding each step through breakdowns are important in creating a precise replicate of the recipe which should capture the essence of the country as well as the person who made it.
I am well aware that the Exercises and earlier FLIP topics are applied to this project thus why I will be implementing what I have acquired from that.

Illustration Ref from Pasta Grannies
Illustration of whole onion, and it being chopped takes reference from the video
Hand illustration uses Francesca's hands as reference
The oven illustration resembles Francesca's oven which she used in the making of Focaccia Genovese.

Project 1 : Final Instructable Infographic Poster
Application of FLIP topics and Exercises
Flip 2 : Saul Wurman's L.A.T.C.H.
- Location : Use of arrows to direct the gaze and to show continuation of process.
- Time : Duration for each necessary step is specified
- Category : Steps are categorised eg. Step 1 shows the preparation of the dough, step 2 shows the preparation of topping an assembling and so on.
- Hierarchy : Each step progresses in cruciality, leading up to the final dish which is the Focaccia Genovese. Placement of each element is crucial in translating information. The final dish is centred on the bottom of the infographic poster to emphasise the outcome of the process. The dish is also larger than every other element making it known/ noticeable that it is the centre piece of the poster.
Flip 3 : Miller's Law of Chunking
Visually, it is self-explanatory on how I have separated information in chunks in my instructable infographic poster. It is separated and grouped into 3 steps/ groups which makes it easier to remember, process and understand. Something which is crucial in a recipe.
Flip 4 : Manuel Lima's 9 Directives Manifesto
Here are some of the Directives which I've incorporated
- Do not Glorify Aesthetics : I've prioritised the information first then the aesthetics.
- Cite your Source : Sources were included in my final animated infographic animation & in the "Sources" section below.
- Look for Relevancy : Considering how the visuals would have a connection to the person involved and their environment.
Project 2 : Animated Infographic
Guidelines
- Maximum duration 1 minute long
- 720p, 1280 X 720 pix(H26/ mp4)
- Publish on Youtube

Reasoning & inspiration
- Art style inspired by Cooking Mama, maintaining a resemblance to the actual objects/ food, but also illustrating in a simple yet detailed manner to ensure its not too straining to the eye and is visually appealing.
- Background colour inspiration : When I think of Italy, I think of the colour blue
- Sound effects were inspired by Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing & Cooking Mama -> cute sounds
- Wanted to make it to have that ASMR vibe with soft yet crisp sound effects, I find it tingles my senses and satisfying to hear.
- Background music chosen to match Francesca's past and personality which is sad aswell as fulfilling & she's a wise, easygoing person. Thus, why I have chosen a calm & classy background music.
Struggles
- It was hard to decide on the flow of each frame but worked it out eventually.
- Summarising the recipe was difficult.
- Found it difficult to compile everything into a minute, as I worried it would shift to the next frame too soon, making the viewers not fully take in the guidance.
- Sound effects and background music audio was too soft, so had to make amendments
- As I was animating in After Effects, I identified some errors as well as some parts I did not illustrate eg. the timer, the fridge, the sizing was off etc. so I had to jump back on Illustrator to add them in then export and import back into After Effects which can be tedious.
What I've learnt
- I didn't necessarily learn anything new in terms of the skills of animating due to previous experience of projects but I definitely feel that I planned out more thoroughly which made it more time efficient and a smoother process compared to when I first did this
- I feel that I was able to effectively capture the essence of Italy, Francesca and the dish. I once struggled with this so I ended up with different looking frames or just didn't show how it relates to one another.
