Final Shazam Result

PART 2 (MY REFLECTION)

Used the quick selection tool to trace myself out of the background then adjusted saturation, brightness, contrast etc.

Made sure my colour matched the background then used the brush tool to create a shadow. Then decreased opacity and used Gaussian blur. I then duplicated, then used the pen tool to trace out what I wanted the reflection to be and then the masking tool then went to path to do the same then reflected my image to ensure theres a reflection of myself on the water.

Final results. I felt like I have effectively replicated the technique shown

Elizabeth Gabrielle Lee’s Xing Undermines The Fetishisation Of Asian Women - IGNANT

Her long-term project titled ‘Xing’ takes form in a photo book, using mimicry to subvert the stereotypes of Asian women and their bodies. “Xing” in Mandarin means “sex,” “sexuality,” “to wake up,” “to grow aware,” and/or “essence” of a person, and to Lee it represents “othering.”
The photo book features the work of ten international photographers combined with essays about racism and stereotyping, as well as sexual and emotional harassment. While we live in a time where sensitivity towards social stereotyping and profiling is daily present, the Asian race is one that’s often not as highlighted. With this project, Lee wants to disrupt the overarching stereotypes and generalisations imposed on Asian females, capturing nude bodies, women taking selfies on their phones, eating food, participating in sexual acts, or challenging beauty standards.

    3. Write a summary about your topic AND highlight (bold) the key points of your summary

Intro - Covid-19 affected me in both a negative and positive manner.

Paragraph 1 - In the positive side, I learnt how to cook which brought me closer to my family in ways I couldn't prior to lockdown. However in the negative aspect, it made communication more difficult and affected my mental health in a drastic way.

Paragraph 2 - I am exposed to the media and told occurrences that happen in light during the pandemic overseas from friends and relatives which weren't positive. Asian hate was becoming more prevalent and has ignited abuse and prejudice against asians. I thought of the fetishisation of asians by the western culture and saw that love hate relationship people have towards asians depending on the situation which angers me.

Summary - Angered by asian prejudice and advocating to stop asian hate, fetishisation and stigma.

-Prevalence of asian hate when covid emerged.

-The way the media presents us and how that negatively affects the community in a toxic and unhealthy manner.

    4. Highlight the key points of your summary

    Title - Yellow Fever

Slogan - I'm not your "Little China Girl"

The link above shows how David Bowie used Iggy Pops song, “Little China Girl” to change its message from racism and fetishisation of Asian women to something that fights it, which i think is such an admirable thing to do, thus why he is one of my favourite singer.

Call for action - stop cultural appropriation, asian hate, fetishisation

    Final Poster

    Title - Yellow Fever
Description - I've applied techniques of collaging and the tools involved in that process. I also applied my learnt knowledge of an affective and visually appealing composition and how to place the images in a harmonious manner. Colour plays a crucial role as taught in the lectures as you have to ensure the colours compliment one another and to attracts one gaze. The selection of font and the placement of messages & words are important, visual hierarchy must be shown through that as it creates a flow for ones eyes.

To explain in detail what I've chosen to put inside the collage/ final design is, the tentacles is quite self explanatory when associated to asian culture. Where we are constantly sexualised and viewed in a certain way by other cultures. For example, an asian girl is submissive and an asian boy is shy and lacks masculinity, all of which is not necessarily true, the stigma is what's so damaging. The model has her face painted in white which is common in asian culture where we see lighter skin as a desirable trait. The bleeding nose shows the internal damage and pain we go through when people do not listen and treat us less like human(thats what the hand covering the eyes symbolise). The sickly look of the model symbolises our mental state which is gradually hurting us and how a deteriorating mental health is so damaging. The  blood is the after effects of our mental health damaging us. The blood also symbolises the death/ lives lost during this pandemic

I've written a strong yet short message on the bottom right corner which is my call for action. The text on the left is my slogan and the text on the models image is the title.

    Reflection

This project was by far the most enjoyable as I felt it was the least restrictive, artistically, as I was able to explore different concepts independently. Moreover, I feel that the planning stages eg. the sketching, the summary etc. was helpful in the sense that I knew in the end was I was about to execute in terms of my final design, making it a smoother process compared if I weren't to do so. At the end of this project, I felt satisfied with the final outcome as I feel that I was able to effectively convey my message relating to the aim of this project.
