Information Design || Exercises

Class started off with Ms. Anis giving a brief introduction of Information Design. She then went through the MIB to ensure that it is clear about what is expected and what is to be done to ensure we pass the module. She also briefed us on the upcoming tasks.

She touched on the Continuous Assessment Individual Exercises which consists of 2 exercises. The first one being "Quantify & Visualise Data" where we had to find household items of similar characteristics and to arrange it in a meaningful as well as visually appealing manner. And of course counting the object was necessary.
As I was on campus, Ms. Anis provided us a variation of buttons and legos. I chose a lego set for Exercise 1.

EXERCISES

Exercise 1 : Quantify and Visualise Data

Evidently in the above image shows the colour flow from clear to periwinkle(left to right). They are arranged in groups according to colour and names are given for each individual colour group(written below the legos). The total number of lego pieces are also written on the bottom of the colour group names.

Next, the legos were arranged according to type. The first row shows the bricks which are thicker in diameter, the second shows the tiles which are thin in diameter. The third shows curved and sharp slopes/ slants which are also grouped according to colour. The fourth shows unusual shapes which are distinctive from the rest of the lego pieces in shape and design. All the lego groups have dimensions and total pieces specified.

Exercise 2 : L.A.T.C.H

Instructions

After understanding the requirements and taking a look at the examples provided for this exercise, I contemplated what other games/ topics I should approach. I realised that I should pick something that I'm familiar with in order to capture an accurate image of what it would look like as a proper L.A.T.C.H infographic poster. The decisions were Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing : New Horizons.

I reached a decision that I will be moving forward with Animal Crossing as I have made more progression in the game compared to Stardew Valley. I mean, I'm still fresh into Animal Crossing but regardless I find more interesting aspects to work with on ACNH.

My Animal Crossing Island Map

The name of my island is "SQUISHcove" and is located on the Southern Hemisphere. On the right of the image, it shows the locations of places you would regularly run into/ holds significance in the game like the town hall, the museum, the campsite, the airport, able sisters, and nook's cranny. You can also locate the houses of the villagers/ residents as shown on the left side of the image. On the middle of the image shows the layout of the island and a general overview of where everything is placed.

Final L.A.T.C.H Infographic Poster

NOTE : Ms. Anis specified that we would only need to show 3 to 4 methods of latch rather than all 5 of them.

To describe my infographic poster, everything except for the characters icons and the Time on the bottom left was drawn from scratch with reference from the screen grab of my map above. I redesigned it to a softer colour rather than the bold colours of the original map. I added the names(blue) of the villagers and their personality type(orange) below their character icons which touches on Category. Moreover, the Locations of me and my characters are clear, shown through the guidance lines. The location of the buildings which would be regularly encountered, have their names written on its icons. Lastly, hierarchy is demonstrated through colour. So my house is in orange rather than the common villager houses which are in yellow. Also, my house is distinctive from the rest evidently through the shape of the house icon and its larger size. This emphasises that my house is more important than my villagers :p
