Information Design || Task 1 : Proposal

Instructions

We were first briefed on the MIB to ensure we fully understand the upcoming tasks.

The main theme was brought up, "Culture", and was explained to be not only reserved for the culture that we know of, which is race and religion, but also a collective group who have the same ideals, similar practices, the same goal, rituals, art and so on.

A more detailed explanation on what Culture is by Dr. JinChi :

Ethnography vs Netnography by Mr. Charles.

Brainstorming
- We met up on 3/1/2022 in zoom to discuss the culture we would be choosing for this project. Some of the ideas consists of cross-dressing, Y2K, greek mythology. We then narrowed the idea of cross dressing to drag.

Consultation with assigned lecturer, Mr. Vinod(7/1/2022), all of which were crucial to us progressing and developing our idea. Feedback is written in detail in "Feedback" section below.

To-do's

- Identify the purpose of what we are trying to do

- Minimum of 5 preliminary ideas and 5 detailed sketches

- Ideas should be unique by nature and should be very different from one another.

How work load was evenly distributed

- Group 9 consists of 5 members so each of us had to provide one idea each

Work distribution for ideas on Drag.

Personal idea sketches

"Roots of Liberation"

Eye of drag for "Advocation"

There were 5 different ideas and was still confused on which idea to go forth with. We had initially decided to go forward with the first idea which was "Tile-based collaborative art" whereby it is a combination of all ideas with its similarities and differences. The tiles consisted of drag eyes which each represent a different idea, mine being advocation which I've sketched out above.

After feedback from Mr Vinod during consultation, it was clear that the idea was too surfaced and literal and that we should think of something with more depth. We had settled for Jia Sheng's idea of "Drag weapon skins" as it posed to have more potential as well as a deeper message behind it.

After the consultation, sketches of the idea was produced as shown in slide page 53 below. The concept is based on 3 traditional weapons of countries which currently have the death penalty for homosexuality. We will then "dragify" it through decorating a 3D printed model of the weapon.

Feedback

7/1/2022

Had consultation through zoom meeting with Mr. Vinod and groups. Mr. Vinod advised us to narrow it down but the group leader stated that instead of narrowing, we should expand it due to the lack of resources provided in the drag culture in Malaysia eg paper dolls(Mr. Vinod brought it up) thus why we will find similarities between drag cultures from different places.

All were good ideas and would be hard to pick. Well articulated and approach was explained clearly but purpose is not clear so need to do more research.

Idea feels too surfaced, it should be indirect and enables the viewer to decipher what they are looking at and a deeper message behind it. Should be more metaphorical rather than a literal approach.

Reflection
It was definitely stressful as at times I felt like my ideas weren't good enough and that I should produce something better. However I've learnt that I can take my initial idea and amplify it into something better. Also, it was assuring to know that I have capable teammates who drives me to do better and that we were all in that same position at one point where we were just lost on how to move forward, we worked it out and eventually found a solution.
